Shave of the Day: Sunday June 30, 2019 and Monday July 1, 2019

Razor: Karve Shaving C plate
Blade: Astra “Blue” Superior Stainless (2nd and 3rd use)
Brush: Sawdust Creation Studio “Alabama Drift”
Soap: Strike Gold Shave Taft
Aftershave: Strike Gold Shave Taft

Taft is inspired by L’eau d’Issey Pour Homme from Issey Miyake with some of the shared notes from both products being yuzu, water lily, bergamot and nutmeg. I badgered Frank (the proprietor) about bringing back Taft and am glad this one got a second term unlike the actual Taft (ba-dum-tss).

In addition to a sample of the Taft aftershave I also  paired it with the Seductive Homme Blue fragrance from Guess. Both scents came together nicely. Taft along with Clinton are my two favorite scents from Strike Gold Shave, although I’d be hard pressed to say that I found an offering from them I that I did not like.

Although they also started offering tallow based options as of late their vegan base would still crack my top five.

Shave of the Day: Thursday June 27, 2019 and Friday June 28, 2019

Razor: Karve C plate
Blade: Polsilver (6th use) and Astra Blue (1st use)
Brush: Sawdust Creation Studio “Alabama Drift”
Soap: Soap Commander Ambition
Aftershave Balm: Soap Commander Ambition

Soap Commander always seems to have clean fresh scents and definitely a well performing vegan soap. Sandalwood always works wonderfully when used as a secondary note or when properly combined with other notes and this scent is a prime example of that.
As I’ve stated before Soap Commander’s balms are some of the best artisan balms you will ever try. Moisturizing and non-greasy.

Vintage Shave of the Day: Wednesday June 26, 2019

Razor: GEM Micromatic
Blade: Personna GEM style (2nd use)
Brush:  Restored Ever-Ready from Reyes Restorations
Soap: Derby Shave Stick
Aftershave Balm: Nivea Cooling

This particular shave single handily changed my mind on GEM razors and had better results than the last time when I used the GEM Junior. One pass was incredibly close and sufficient.

I’m beginning to become a fan of the Derby stick too. Although similar to Arko this one seems to have less of the industrial lemon scent Arko has. The Derby stick seems to have a degree of citronella but not to the level of Williams Mug Soap. As far as performance comparisons I couldn’t say since it’s been awhile since I’ve used Arko, but they do seem to be pretty on par from what I remember.

Shave of the Day: Monday June 24, 2019 and Tuesday June 25, 2019

Razor: Timeless Titanium .95
Blade: Polsilver (4th and 5th use)
Brush: Turn-N- Shave “Wicked”
Soap: Chiseled Face Cryogen
Aftershave: Chiseled Face Cryogen

This is my fist time using Cryogen and many of you are probably familiar with it. Regarded as the most heavily mentholated product in wet shaving and no other discernible fragrance besides that ingredient. This was a thirsty soap and took some work to get the water ratio just right. Besides that the performance was great and had a wonderful post feel that I’ve heard CF soaps are known for.

According to the artisan’s website since this is a menthol based product and it is best to let the tub completely dry out before recapping the soap and also to avoid “blooming” it (which is an unnecessary and risky practice with any soap anyway) to avoid any negative effects on the soap.
This product will definitely get some traction over the summer months.

Shave of the Day: Sunday June 23, 2019

Razor: Karve C Plate
Blade: Polsilver (3rd use)
Brush: Craving Shaving “Wasp”
Soap: Fine Green Vetiver
Aftershave: Fine Green Vetiver
Fragrance/Cologne: Art of Shaving Vetiver Citron

Fine has seemed to go to the wayside with the influx of artisans to the scene the past couple years but I have always found them to have awesome lather consistency, adequate slickness and nice straightforward scent offerings. Some have made issue with the fact their production is not in-house and the price hike in their splashes despite having a rather simple ingredient list. With all that said I do find the soap plenty “Fine.”

Shave of the Day: Friday June 21, 2019 and Saturday June 22, 2019

This hybrid brush made of resin and driftwood from the Old Cahaba River in Alabama has already worked it’s way into my favorites. It’s easy to grip, comfortable in the hand and most of all a flat out a work of art.
Despite TOBS Sandalwood’s beloved reputation, personally I think Cedarwood surpasses it in terms of scent. This and TOBS No. 50 have become some of my favorite offerings from the London based company that I’ve obtained in the past year. Barbedeaux is also always a reliable and consistent product-moisturizing and neutral enough to be paired with and any soap or cream.
The Art of Shaving Citron Vetiver cologne. This was a find at Marshall’s. The longevity and scent strength on this are it’s strong points. Citron and Vetiver have always been some of my favorite combined notes

Shave of the Day: Monday June 17, 2019 and Tuesday June 18, 2019

Razor: Rex Ambassador
Blade: Polsilver (3rd and 4th use)
Brush: Frank Shaving Two Band
Soap: Pré de Provence No. 63
Aftershave Balm: Pré de Provence No. 63

Over the weekend while in Tabula Rasa, a local self-described stationery store at Trolley Square in Salt Lake City, I picked up Pré de Provence. They have a balanced selection of wet shaving products from Europe such as Edwin Jagger, Floris and Kent as well as domestic artisans such as The Holy Black. In addition to wet shaving products this particular store has books, pens, leather bound journals and all kinds of other items associated with old world hobbies. If you’re ever in town or a local it is worth checking out.

As much of an affinity I have for our American artisans I’ve made a point to obtain more products from Europe and some brands like Baume.be and Antiga Barbearia de Barrio have made it on my list of favorite staple shave products. PdP is a vegan soap originating from France and contains shea butter as an active ingredient with No.63 being described as a scent that is “aromatic, warm and spicy” according to the product description on their website. Once I smelled it off the puck it was more pleasant than I recall from the last time I used it, cologne-like, more clean and less earthy.

I’ve had No. 63 in the form of a brushless cream and the matching balm for a couple years and have only reached for it a handful of times. Although brushless creams have their place on the market and can be practical for travel, I find they diminish the day-to-day experience many of us are looking for. In the coming days as I use this setup I am intrigued to see how the brushless cream would actually do as a pre-shave in conjunction with the soap. Overall the performance was wonderful in regards to slickness and post feel. It took a little extra effort to build the lather but we can chalk that up to my inexperience with this soap for the time being.
